Not everyone favors Northampton Borough's plan to build a minipark in its uptown business district.
The minipark is proposed to be located on formerly vacant land the borough acquired earlier.
The borough expects to utilize grant funding and county and casino proceeds in an effort to provide the uptown with a lift and some economic incentives. A church is located to the south of the proposed park site, and a coffee shop is on the north side just steps away from the Roxy Theatre. The park would have benches, a gazebo, lighting and signs.
A farmers market which made its debut in 2013 will return this summer to the lot.
At the recent council meeting Borough Manager Gene Zarayko addressed the issue.
"At the last borough council meeting, we had a half-hour public meeting to discuss the uptown park. There were a half-dozen business people in the audience and unfortunately they did not provide any input," Zarayko said.
Recently, Zarayko noted the borough received "some negative correspondence pertaining to this park."
None of the council members made comments regarding the issue.
"I have enclosed a confidential copy in your packet," Zarayko said.
Borough Community Planner Victor Rodite is the point man for the borough concerning the proposed minipark. Some on council informed Rodite the plans initially brought forward need to be scaled back.
Councilman Ed Pany, while not delving into the intricate aspects of what the park should be like, said the bottom line is expenditures are not to exceed $105,000.
It is not certain whether construction of the minipark could get under way this year.
