Block party, race draw a crowd

Catasauqua kicked off Old Home Week ,June 27, with an opening night concert featuring the Large Flowerheads.

Some of the concert-goers were part of the nearly 200 people who gathered at 9 a.m. Saturday on Bridge Street for a 5K run that morphed into a block party that lasted until 3 p.m.

Run Lehigh Valley set up the 5K race.

"We had a little over 100 pre-race signups and almost as many just before the start of the race," said Mark Cruttenden, who coordinated the event.

Old Home Week is a weeklong celebration in Catasauqua and North Catasauqua with an emphasis on inviting past residents and friends to come home to renew old friendships.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first Old Home Week that celebrated the industrial progress of the communities.

The celebration lasts through the July 4 holiday weekend.

During the block party, vendors lined the sidewalks as residents roamed pedestrian friendly Bridge Street, picking out their favorite spots.

Phat Boys, a country band, provided musical entertainment for the event.
