Allen F. Meckes Jr.quartermaster of Egypt VFW Post 7293

Allen F. Meckes Jr., 69, of Whitehall, died June 27, 2014, in the Hospice House of the VNA of St. Luke's, Lower Saucon Township.

He and his wife Ann Marie (Oncheck) Meckes were married 44 years in February.

Born Oct, 29, 1944, in Allentown, he was the son of the late Allen F. Sr. and Josephine (Kohlhauser) Meckes.

He faithfully and honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War era achieving the rank of EM2 having served two tours of duty.

Having served on the USS Richard E. Edwards, the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, the USS America and the USS WASP, he had the distinct honor of being initiated into the Royal Order of Shellbacks.

He was employed in the electrical maintenance department of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. for 30 years before retiring in 1999.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Coplay.

He served as quartermaster of Egypt VFW Post 7293 for the past 18 years.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by a daughter, Denise M. Hertzog and her husband, Michael, of Coplay; siblings Richard and his wife, Jeanette, of Gouldsboro, Robert and his wife, Constance, of Whitehall, Joann Nederostek and her husband, Bernard, of Northampton, Ruth Ann Kichline and her husband, Ralph, of Bath; and grandchildren Damon, Chyanne and Broc.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Bechtel.

A memorial service with full military honors will take place 7:30 p.m. July 3, at Egypt VFW Post 7293, 5209 Springmill Road, Whitehall, with the Rev. Timothy D. Boyer officiating.

The family will receive guests following the service during a time of fellowship and refreshment at the VFW.
