NORCO Legion baseball season coming to a close

It's the final week of the NORCO legion season and the South Division race is up for grabs.

Hellertown (11-3) leads the division by two games heading into this week over the Wanderers (10-5) and Freemansburg (10-5), but things can change quickly if either of the latter opponents can pull off victories over the current league leader.

Freemansburg took on Hellertown Monday night and the Wanderers get their chance to knock Hellertown off on Wednesday.

With Hellertown having to play an extra game this week as well, things could become interesting when the regular season wraps up this weekend.

"You can say that we have a big game against them this week," said Freemansburg head coach Chris Medei. "Our goals have always been to make the playoffs and win the division. We know winning the division will be tough right now, but we'll keep fighting."

Both Freemansburg and the Wanderers appear to be in good shape of claiming a playoff spot, despite sitting behind Hellertown in the division.

With the league sending the four division winners, along with the next four teams with the best records into the playoffs, both clubs seem to be near locks to qualify for the postseason.

Wanderers' head coach Dwight Pulieri hopes his team can end the year on a high note heading into the postseason, as they finish the week with games against the Jeffs, Northampton and Hellertown early this week.

"I'm glad we're able to have the season wrap up by Wednesday," he said. "It gives us time to take a little break over the holiday weekend. We just need to take care of our business this week and not worry about what Hellertown or anybody else."

Bath (9-6) leads the West Division by two games and should lock up the division title.

Easton (10-4) is the clear runaway favorite to win the East Division, while the North Division has East Stroudsburg (11-5), Big Pocono (9-5) and The Birches (8-6) in the race for the division and the playoffs.

Once the division winners are formulated, as well the other four teams with the best records, the eight-team playoff will be re-seeded, which could be a boost for the likes of the Wanderers and Freemansburg, who've played in a tough division all year.

"It definitely helps us going against good teams all year in the division," Medei said. "It creates a sense of urgency for the kids and that's good for them once we head to the postseason."
