Early exit for Lehigh Valley team

Lehigh Valley's Carpenter Cup softball team was eliminated from the Carpenter Cup Softball Classic after falling to Berks County, 2-0, and Delaware South, 6-1, last week.

Freedom High School outfielder, Megan Brown, had a hit and a stolen base in Lehigh Valley's first game against Berks County.

"Defensively, we played well, but the fact is they scored on a pretty big hit to the outfield, and we couldn't get our bats going. When someone else scores, you need to get the bats going," Brown said.

At one point, Lehigh Valley had runners on second and third base, when Brown was called out on a third strike.

"The count was 3-2, and the pitch was a ball, but it was a called strike. There was only one out. We could have had the bases loaded. I moved my bat back. If your wrist breaks, it's a strike, but I didn't do that," she said.

Brown had a double and scored Lehigh Valley's only run in the second game against Delaware South.

"I planned on slapping the ball, but it was a solid hit. I saw it go in the hole, and [our first base coach] told me to keep going. It was a stand-up double," said Brown.

Salisbury High School infielder, Meghan Williams, had a single, moving Brown to third base. Brown then scored on a ground out by Pleasant Valley High School's Maddie Shaneberger.

Brown said, "The ball went to second base, but since the play was made toward first, I took off."

Tri Cape from New Jersey was the eventual Carpenter Cup Softball Classic winner.

"We were disappointed. We wanted to go farther, but it was a good experience, and we learned from what we did," said Brown.

The double-elimination tournament, sponsored by the Philadelphia Phillies, also served as a showcase for college coaches, scouting players on teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
