Fire destroys second floor of home in East Allen Township

East Allen Township Fire Chief Barry Frantz said on Monday a noon-time blaze last Friday caused extensive damage to a Weaversville home.

According to Frantz, the fire does not appear to be suspicious. An official ruling as to the fire's origin awaits investigation by the fire marshall.

Michael Scheirer was at home when the fire broke out at his residence at 6899 Bullshead Road. Scheirer escaped without any injuries. The residence is owned by Scheirer and his wife, Debra.

A cat perished in the fire, which engulfed the second floor and attic of the home, Frantz said.

"It is hard to put an estimate on the damages," Frantz said. "The second floor and attic had extensive fire damage and water on the first floor."

The home is located across the street from the historic Weaversville Inn.

As township firefighters arrived at the scene, thick dark smoke billowed to the sky, flames darted out of the second floor windows and into the attic.

A firefighter was on the roof, cutting a hole to vent the property, as flames shot out from the opening. Initially, Frantz said it was a one-alarm fire, but it finally went to three alarms.

"Because of the heat and manpower, we went to three alarms," Frantz said.

An hour later at 1 p.m. the fire was contained. Fire personnel stayed at the scene because of hot spots throughout the home.

At first, firefighters used two master streams, which displace 500 gallons of water per minute to knock down the fire quickly. They then reverted back to the regular hoses and nozzles.

Responding along with East Allen Fire Department were Allen, Northampton, Lehigh Township, North Catasuqua and Catasauqua fire departments. There were no injuries to fire personnel.
