LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Catty sitting in thick of things

Catasauqua's Connie Mack manger Phil Ferguson likes the position of his club.

Catasauqua began the week with an overall 6-4-1 record and the club continues to gain momentum as it will soon begin its second half of the season.

"We're in a good spot right now," said Ferguson. "We have been coming together as a club, and we have really been jelling together. We have been getting some outstanding individual performances and we also have had some solid team performances."

In the latest two wins, Catty posted a 10-4 win over Bangor. Nate Pontician, who has been the workhorse and has spearheaded the staff, struck out 13 batters in a solid seven-inning performance. Traves Lebron went 4-for-4 and Bill Nonnemacher had a 3-for-3 day as the duo helped pace the club offensively.

"Nonnemacher was hitting at the bottom of our order and he managed to turn our lineup over with some big hits. He (Nonnemacher) has been doing that for us lately. You like to think about moving guys up in the (batting) order, but he (Nonnemacher) has been effective down there."

Lebron also had an outstanding performance on the mound as he threw seven innings in a 10-5 victory over Freemansburg.

With strong performances from Pontician and Lebron, Ferguson has watched his pitching staff add some necessary depth. Pontician will be the team's representative in the league all-star game at Limeport Saturday night.

"It was nice to see him (Lebron) go out and give us an outing like he did," said Ferguson. "I now feel we have some depth on this staff and we will need it down the stretch.

"Pontician has just been dynamite for us this season. He has been increasing his speed as he has been throwing in the 80s. He has really been a horse for us out there and has been getting good movement on all of his pitches."

Ferguson believes his club easily could have two more wins under its belt as they recently dropped games to teams with lesser records. But he also realizes how baseball also can bounce either the right or wrong way.

"We could have two extra wins right now," said Ferguson. "When we see where we are now, we can look at those two games and see how we can have seven wins. But we just need to win those types of games in the future."

Ferguson believes his club can keep its recent rush of momentum going as they will face Stroudsburg and Roseto before the all-star break.

Catasauqua had managed to work itself near the top half of the league standings behind leaders Pocono Mountain East and Lehigh Bethlehem.

"We have a number of things in our favor right now," said Ferguson. "At the start of the year, we had a few people carrying us along. Now, we're getting more and more people stepping up. We have a chance to week to move up further by grabbing a few more wins."
