Allen Township approves FedEx plans

Now that the Allen Township Planning Commission has recommended the board of supervisors approve the $9.6 million FedEx packaging warehouse and distribution center, a vote by the five supervisors is not as forthcoming as some expected.

The five-member board of supervisors scheduled a meeting on June 24. At that time, FedEX and the Rockefeller Group, the second party seeking approval for the project on 253 acres along Willowbrook Road, were to have addressed the board.

Township Manager Ilene Eckhart and Supervisor Dale Hassler confirmed FedEx and the Rockefeller Group were to make presentations regarding the project.

Eckhart said the board will review the planning commission's recommendations and the FedEx and Rockefeller Group statements and paperwork before votes are cast.

The supervisors have not made any public comments regarding the proposed project since it was submitted to the planning commission.

"We are done," planning commission Chairman William Holmes said on Monday concerning the commission's review of the plans and its recommendations.

The planning commission held a series of public hearings on the issue beginning last December.

Holmes said at the final session held two weeks ago, a series of motions were made and voted on regarding a host of technical and other matters in recommending the project.

Eckhart, also secretary for the planning commission, said on Monday she is transcribing the planning commission's recommendations, which were to go before the supervisors on June 24.

The session was scheduled for 7 p.m., and was open to the public.

The board of supervisors at a meeting earlier this month agreed to a request to extend the review period for the FedEx land development plan.

A large number of residents have voiced opposition to the project arguing it will increase traffic and thereby affect the quality of life in the area.

FedEX has promised it will make $25 million in road improvements, including widening several roads in the area. Also, numerous trees and other greenery have been proposed.

The state ethics board recently ruled no conflict of interest exists by allowing Allen Township Supervisor Bruce Frack to vote on the FedEx project.

The opinion notes the airport authority is a government agency, not a private company.

The township sought a decision from the state ethics board after several residents complained Frack has a conflict of interest because of his job at the airport, which he denied any conflict exists.
