Young Pates have lots of potential

Freedom High School's softball team wrapped up its 2014 season with a record of 13-8 and a District 11 playoff run.

Freedom coach Nora Borger expects that all the Patriots will be returning next year, with the exception of graduates, Kelsey Brandl and Carly Deichman.

"I'm really looking forward to next season. We're taking a little break, and I'm letting them play their summer ball. I don't want them to get too worn out. Then, we might go into the fall league," Borger said.

This past season, two of Freedom's best games included a 3-0 victory over archrival Liberty, and a 9-1 victory over Nazareth, both at home.

"I knew we had a lot of potential, and we definitely played well at home. [Overall] we played well defensively. Our defense was the best it has been in years. We didn't have a lot of errors, but a couple of mental mistakes hurt us badly against Pleasant Valley," said Borger.

The Patriots lost to Pleasant Valley in the second round of districts, 5-4.

"We were in a bracket for districts that we could have won, but we didn't make it," Borger said. "They're young, and sometimes you forget they're only 15. Sometimes things will go right, and sometimes things will go wrong. You just can't hang onto the disappointments or things will be awful."

Consistency is one of the Patriots' main goals, and the outcome of the 2014 season will help Borger set goals for 2015.

"We beat Easton twice. We finished over .500, we split with Liberty, and we were really close to beating Northampton and Beca. When we started getting to the end, we thought we had a real shot because we only lost to Parkland 4-2. We wanted to get them to believe they can beat big teams. It's a mindset," she said.

All things considered, Borger expects the Patriots to do some great things in the next two years.
