Richard D. Gomes

Richard D. Gomes, of Alburtis, died May 21, 2014, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Marilyn (Casella) Gomes. Born in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of the late Seraphim and Josephine Gomes.

He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He was an officer in the Navy and was awarded a commendation for his brave action in rescuing a drowning man from the harbor of Yokohama, Japan. He was a member of the American Legion.

He spent his working years as an executive in the construction engineering field.

He was a loyal member of the Knights of Columbus as a member of St. Thomas More Council #4397 and as a 4th degree member of the Cathedral Assembly #3298 serving as Faithful Navigator. He volunteered regularly at St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen. He was a hospice volunteer at Heartland Hospice.

He was an avid runner and finished eight marathons including the NYC Marathon.

He was active in local politics and was a member of the Lehigh County Republican Committee and served on the local school board.

He is survived by his wife; children, Christine and her husband Robert Wilke, Elizabeth and her husband Robert Savino, Kathleen Kennedy, and Sarah; brother, Rev. Robert; grandchildren, Peter, Daniel and David Wilke, Jacqueline and Victoria Savino, and Teresa and Joseph Kennedy. He was predeceased by a brother, Anthony.
