Square dance at Willow Brook

Part of the festivities during Catasauqua's Old Home Week include a barbecue and square dance at Willow Brook Farm June 28.

Catasauqua Borough Councilwoman and Historical Catasauqua Preservation Association President Deb Mellish is coordinating the Old Home Week committee.

"The featured band is Contra Deceptives, with caller Diane Hartzell," she said of the square dance event. "Contra dance is partner dancing which has variants on the traditional square dance. It's also referred to as New England folk dancing."

If you need to brush up on your dancing skills, Hartzell will be on the floor for some impromptu instruction.

Centered on the July 4th holiday, Old Home Week is a weeklong celebration in Catasauqua and North Catasauqua. Past residents and friends are encouraged to come home to renew old friendships and enjoy a number of special event. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first Old Home Week celebration that celebrated the industrial progress of the communities.

Holly Fuller McLain suggested having a square dance at the stone barn on the farm.

The Fuller family was instrumental in the first Old Home Week in 1914. Although the stone barn was suggested, it only has one exit which had sponsors worried about fire code regulations.

"We worked with Whip Hausman, the head cowboy, and have a patio area along the pond. The barbecue and dancing will be under the stars with courtesy tents lining the patio," Mellish said.

Enter off of Howertown Road at Fuller Drive, just south of the Willow Brook Golf Course. From the tree-lined drive, make the first right onto the one-lane paved road. Parking will be at the end of the road.

Barbecue will be provided by Fat Daddy's and the Willow Brook Golf Course clubhouse will be open for cash bar patrons.

Dancing and barbecue are included in the price of a ticket to the event. Part of the ticket price will be used to restore a horse and buggy which was donated to the HCPA in 2013.

Hausman will offer wagon tours of the farm starting at 5:30 p.m., right after the Old Home Week block party winds down on the streets of Catasauqua.

The barbecue will open at 6 p.m. and dancing will be from 7-10 p.m.

"We are trying to convince a popular former Catasauqua gym teacher who taught square dance as part of gym classes to make a guest appearance," Mellish said.

Tickets are available at Hartzell's Pharmacy, Evonne's Sandwich Shop, Julia's 4 Seasons, Schlegel Dry Cleaners, Cathy's Creative Catering and online at www.hcpa.org/ohw, under the events tab.
