LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Seniors get a last game

In an all-star game, most people probably expect a heavy explosion offensively coming from the batter's box.

And while that was that case, at least for one team, it was the dominant outing of the Colonial League and Mountain Valley Conference's pitching staff that stole the show last Saturday afternoon.

Following a first inning that produced a 2-2 ballgame, the Lavender Team's (Colonial League/MVC) quintet of pitchers allowed just four hits and one run the rest of the way to drop the Orange Team (composed of players from the Lehigh Valley Conference), 11-3, in the 29th Annual Howard E. Deppe Senior All-Star Baseball Classic at Limeport Stadium.

After Catasauqua's Zach Bradley allowed two runs in the first, he pitched a one-two-three inning in the second to get the pitching spectacle starting. It was the first of four one-two-three frames for the Orange Team.

"In my first inning, we let up two [and] one was on a passed ball," Bradley said. "In the second inning, we went one-two-three. After that, all of the pitchers pitched well, and it was really a good game."

Salisbury's Justin Aungst, who was credited with the win after Lavender scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth, struck out five batters in the third and fourth.

Pen Argyl's Devon Labarre allowed one hit and struck out four batters in the fifth and sixth, Palmerton's Nick Frey pitched two hitless innings in the seventh and eighth, and Northern Lehigh's Matt Egan closed out the ninth.

"It was pretty cool, because I hit against a lot of them and played against a lot of them," Bradley said of the pitching staff. "Pitching with them was pretty cool"

Whitehall's Jeff Charles pitched one inning for Orange, allowing two hits and a run. Ryan Bonshak was 1-for-1 and caught in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, while Tyler Bridgewood finished 0-for-1.

Nicholas Horinko of Wilson scored on a throwing error, and Catasauqua's Tyler Correll connected on a single that scored Frey in the fourth to give Lavender a 4-2 advantage. Lavender would not be threatened the rest of the way. That fourth inning rally, which started with two Lavender strikeouts, only seemed to have sparked their bats as the game progressed.

In the sixth, Lavender reeled off five-consecutive hits after a strikeout began the inning. That led to a four-run barrage, as Bangor's Tanner Brescancine, Bangor's Frank Cutler, Saucon Valley's Bryan Schoch and Wilson's Dakota Bogoly all crossed home plate.

While Lavender provided much of the fireworks on Saturday afternoon, the game went beyond just the final score. It was an opportunity for the best players to compete against one another on the brightest stage. Still, the Colonial League/MVC squad was proud to show the area what they're all about.

"It was actually pretty cool beating them, especially because we have a lot less kids over there," Bradley said. "We hammered them 11-3, that was pretty cool."

Frey scored on an infield error in the top of the ninth, and Correll's groundout scored Salisbury's Adam Ebner to make it an 11-2 game. Emmaus' Jason Fatzingerwinner of the Frank Yelinko Hitting Competitionscored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.
