Reunion, pub crawl add fun to OHW

Ben Ferenchak has the task of coordinating a mega reunion for anyone who attended Catasauqua High School.

"All the events are free and the committee is contacting as many classmates as we can find," said Ferenchak.

According to Ferenchak, over 300 people have said they would attend with another 200 making plans.

"Some classes, like 1973, never held a reunion," he said. "This gives everyone a chance to renew friendships."

No reservations are required. Donations are welcome, but not required.

The reunion runs from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 5. While it is an Old Home Week event, it is happening concurrently with the Independence holiday J4 Celebration at the North Catasauqua Park.

"We start the day at 9 a.m. with a [J4] parade," explained Ferenchak. "We will have a special tent set up near the ball field at North Catasauqua Park for the reunion."

The assembly area for the parade is Rock Hill. The reunion is BYOB and the nearby Blue Monkey restaurant will host a reunion party with special events and prizes starting at 4 p.m.

According to Ferenchak, a J4 fireworks display will begin at 7 p.m. at Alumni Field in Catasauqua.

"The fireworks are synced with music, so you should be in the stands to get the full effect," he said.

The reunion adds a new dimension to the annual J4 Celebration while celebrating Old Home Week. Centered on the July 4th holiday, Old Home Week is a weeklong celebration of Catasauqua and North Catasauqua inviting past residents and friends to come home to renew old friendships.

While Old Home Week is a family event, there is an adults-only party Thursday, July 3, that promises to keep party-goers occupied until the wee hours of the morning. Ten local taverns will have specials during the Old Home Week celebration and added items during the July 3 OHW Pub Crawl.

The event takes in the unique taverns, some of which were taverns during the first Old Home Week in 1914. The Arch Street Hotel at 120 Arch St. has the original bar from the 1800s and will have a shuffleboard night.

The Catty Club at 226 Pine St. can show a lithograph of their 1914 decorations.

Richie's Public House, 129 Howertown Road, has been a tavern since 1943.

The Aquasat Lounge on 119 Bridge St. will have Tacos to munch on.

Tony's Top Cat Bar and Grill will entice party-goers with Tex-Mex specials.

The Catty Corner will have a patio party in progress and the Blue Monkey will have lots of giveaways for patrons.

Participants will have to get to McCarty's early, pub crawl or no pub crawl. He is closing at 7 p.m.

Metro & Johns will have a full-service menu and lots of parking.

Fossil's Last Stand will have drink specials.

There is no charge to participate in the pub crawl, but there are prizes. Start the crawl in any order.

Visit five or more pubs and pick up a passport at your first stop to enter a drawing for six prizes.

Catasauqua Old Home Week 2014 has a Facebook page detailing all the activities.

If you are driving from pub to pub, have a designated driver. Anytime Taxi will be available for local transport around the borough.
