Man from standoff incarcerated

The man who threatened to blow up a building June 8 in Northampton is now in Northampton County Prison.

Tim Snyder, 44, who is being held on $50,000 straight bail, is charged with making terroristic threats and recklessly endangering others in connection with an eight-hour-standoff with borough and state police at the Gin Mill & Grille, Northampton Police Chief Ron Morey said Monday.

Northampton District Judge Diane Marakovits last Tuesday arraigned Snyder on the criminal charges, after which she set bail. Snyder had been taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhleberg for evaluation after being taken into custody, Morey said. Snyder was released by the hospital following a one-day stay.

A preliminary hearing set for today, June 19, was continued. No new hearing date has been set, Morey said.

Snyder, a resident of a basement apartment at the Gin Mill began the stand-off by complaining police did not respond quickly enough for a report of a stolen pocket knife. Snyder told police he had a bomb and borough police called in a state police emergency response team.

Snyder and police maintained a standoff for eight hours during which time Snyder demanded pizza and $200.

Police unsuccessfully used a loud speaker to convince Snyder to surrender. He was taken into custody when state police used a specialized vehicle to ram the window to a room in which Snyder was holed up.

Snyder did not have a bomb or other explosive device, police said.
