Catasauqua resident represents state

Miss Pennsylvania in the Miss International Beauty Pageant paid a visit to the Catasauqua Council at its June 2 meeting.

Miss Pennsylvania is Sable Butler, a Catasauqua resident in the pageant.

"I grew up in Stroudsburg and moved to Catasauqua four years ago," she said. "This is my home now."

Butler's next step in the competition is a trip to Orlando to compete in the Miss U.S. International Pageant June 24-28. The winner of the Orlando pageant goes on to Okinawa to compete in the Miss International Beauty Pageant.

The 25-year-old Butler is a print and runway model, who has also filmed a television commercial.

She is a licensed cosmetologist and a certified cosmetology teacher at Monroe Career and Technical Institue.

Butler graduated with honors from Pocono Mountain East High School.

For the next year, she will travel around Pennsylvania talking to groups about her brand of style and volunteerism.

Butler is a member of the Temple El Refugio, a Bethlehem church that serves people from various nations.

She is the recipient of a state citation for her volunteer work. She also is a one of the first all-star members of Charity Miles, a mobile phone application that allows participants to donate money to a selected charity based on the number of biking, running or walking miles. The app records the amount of the exercise and sponsors fund the charities.

The Miss International program began in 1960 when the Miss Universe Pageant left Long Beach for Miami. The pageant awards winners based on looks, intelligence and their ability to take action.

Contestants are expected to serve as "Ambassadors of Peace and Beauty", showing tenderness, benevolence, friendship, beauty, intelligence and, most importantly, a great international sensibility.

"I look forward to seeing Miss International represented by someone from Catasauqua," said Butler.

On June 12, Butler hosted a gathering at the Comfort Inn in Bethlehem.

"In the pageant business we call this a send off party," she said.

Catasauqua Mayor Barbara Schlegel attended the send off and presented a proclamation to Butler.
