Trojan all-stars compete in Lions Classic

The theme for the 33rd Annual Lions All-Star Soccer Classic was fun, but competitive play. Players were selected based on their overall play during the regular season and were able to kick around for one final time as high school players.

The girls game may have been the most competitive. Lehigh Valley Conference/Mountain Valley Conference offensive MVP Amanda McCarthy of Emmaus scored two goals, one in each half, to lead the way in a 3-1 victory over the Colonial League All-Stars Sunday, June 1 at Whitehall High School.

After Pleasant Valley's Ema Sabovic opened up the scoring in the 13th minute, Alicia Binn from Saucon Valley tied the game at one. But that is when McCarthy took over the game, as she took a dribble passed a defender and slotted home a goal with eight minutes left until halftime.

Her second goal, coming in the second half, gave the LVC/MVC a cushion that they would not give up.

Kayla Haberbosch played up front and had her own chances on goal. The Parkland senior was able to keep possession on the offensive third enough to secure the victory.

The boys game was not as close, but it was still competitive, and the all-stars put on a show for the crowd, netting a combined nine goals.

Colonial League offensive MVP Gio Mowrey (Notre Dame Green Pond) and Luke Masiado (Saucon Valley) scored within three minutes of each other to open up the game and give the Colonial League all-stars a sizeable 2-0 lead early.

But Belal Mohamed put a surge into the LVC/MVC all-stars with a rocket goal from outside of the 18. Northampton's Sam Gaye, the LVC/MVC offensive MVP tied the game before halftime.

But just as they did in the first half, the Colonial League scored two straight goals to take a two goal advantage.

Southern Lehigh's Will Demmel and Northwestern's Brandon Ettl put the two goal cushion back on the board early in the second half.

Gaye did his best to keep the LVC/MVC with another goal, but Ryan Brown (Moravian Academy) and Matthew Palmer (Bangor) sealed the win with a goal each to take this one 6-3.

"I was really disappointed when the high school season ended," said Mohamed. "Just thinking that I wouldn't get to play with my teammates again. But I was really excited to play with them [Nick Eckhart and Kyle Stengel] again before we went off to college. I really enjoyed it. It was a fun day."

Stengel was named the LVC/MVC defensive MVP for his play in the back of the defense.
