Moravian Academy news: Year ends well for all
On June 4, underclassmen took their last final and the school year was officially over.
Seniors had already finished classes on May 9, and spent two weeks of May completing a Post-Term project. The goal of this project was to find a work or internship experience that is related to a field the students would like to explore or study. Many students worked with doctors or in various financial and engineering companies.
Moravian's commencement ceremony was held May 31 at the Upper School Campus. Having graduated, the class of 2014 is ready to enjoy its summer and prepare for the new and exciting changes that it will experience this fall.
The spring sports season was eventful for Moravian Academy. The tennis team won its sixth consecutive District XI team championship and its third consecutive Colonial League title. Additionally, both the boys and girls lacrosse teams reached the semifinals of the district tournament. In the district tennis doubles tournament, Zach Shaff ('16) and I took home the gold. We continued our success out at Hershey, winning the entire PIAA State Tournament. The rest of the tennis team also experienced great success. This year the team fell in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Also, the Colonial League All League first team for tennis was entirely composed of Moravian Academy tennis players.
Moravian Academy not only takes pride in its successes, but also in its students' behavior and sportsmanship. This year, Jack Reilly ('14), a first doubles player and co-captain of the tennis team, won the Colonial League Sportsmanship Award for tennis.
Apart from experiencing success in athletics, Moravian also has a strong drama and theater program. This year Moravian's production of "My Favorite Year," received the Outstanding Production by a Small School award. In addition, this spring the school put together a production of "Our Town."
Moravian has also recently increased its sustainability efforts. The school recently created an apiary, which is just a place for hives of honeybees to be kept. Furthermore, the school has just added a sizable garden near its science labs.
After such a busy year, all the students will be happy to have some time to relax. However, many students will not be resting for long. They will be participating in summer enrichment programs, college courses, volunteer activities, jobs and athletic activities to keep themselves occupied this summer.
Recently graduated students will surely be soaking up their lives and friends in the Lehigh Valley as they will be relocated and put into drastically new environments very shortly. Hopefully, our recent graduates find similar success in their new environments and that Moravian has another eventful year.
