Fullerton off to a hot start

The Fullerton Legion baseball team got out of the gate like gangbusters, vaulting to the top of the standings as this week's round of action got underway.

They came into the week at 3-1 which placed them atop the LVL along with Southern Lehigh and North Parkland. However, Sunday's loss to Emmaus muddied their hold on first, with the standings not updated at the time of this article.

Still, it's been a good start for Fullerton as they look to make the playoffs once again. General Manager Jim Hein said one of the reasons they've been able to post those early wins was their stable of strong arms dotting the roster.

"We have a lot of good pitchers this year," he said.

That group includes Jeff Charles, Tyler Correll, Dakota Schiffer, Matt Melosky, David Laky, Jacob Fink, Alex Bruneio and Cory Arbogast.

Of that mix, Schiffer is 2-0 with 0.87 ERA, while Charles is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA.

Hein said it's been quite a few years since they've never had such a deep staff, and with an abundance of pitching, they'll be able to stay fresh throughout the season.

They've also been good at the plate, scoring 26 runs in those four games.

"We're really hitting the ball well, too," said Hein.

Even in Sunday's loss, Hein said they hit the ball hard, noting that eventually those hard hit balls will find the gaps.

Among players who have had at least five at-bats, Charles leads the way with a torrid .556 average, including seven RBIs. That's followed by James Scheuren who sports a .500 mark. Also tearing the cover off the ball is Dalton Buskirk (.455), Arbogast (.333), Nicholas Delp (.333), Bruneio (.333) and Melosky (.300).

The Ramblers also feature Jacob Stopay, Jose Berrios, Julio Dalmasi-Gomez, Nathan Doria, Ariel Figueroa, Ricard Figueroa, Jr. and George Hana.

With such a potent combination of pitching and hitting, Hein said they should be able to stay in the hunt for the regular season championship all season.

Despite Sunday's loss, Hein expects them to bounce back and continue playing the way they did at the outset of the season. They've also had a full complement of players each game, adding to their success.

"We have a good mix of players, and once we get back into the rhythm again, we'll be fine," said Hein.

Fullerton is slated to play Coplay, Southern Lehigh and Salisbury this week.
