LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Estrada part of Lions Classic

A Colonial League Honorable Mention selection during the fall soccer season, Catasauqua senior Lester Estrada had one last opportunity to showcase his skills at the high school level before continuing his playing days at Albright College.

And Estrada and his Colonial League senior teammates went out with style during the weekend's 33rd Annual Lions All-Star Soccer Classic At Whitehall High School's Zephyrs Sports Complex.

In the second game of the day, the Colonial League boys blitzed the Lehigh Valley Conference and Mountain Valley Conference team early and scored four second-half goals to secure the 6-3 victory on Sunday.

"It's really good because there are a lot of great players here," Estrada said of the experience. "You get a lot of chemistry, and you get to bond. I got to meet a lot of new people. It was a lot of fun."

Notre Dame Green Pond's Gio Mowrey and Saucon Valley's Luke Masiado scored back-to-back goals 3:30 apart for the Colonial League to take a 2-0 advantage in the 14th minute of play.

Following that quick start for the boys in gold, the LVC/MVC added two goals before intermission to knot the game 2-2. But scores by Saucon Valley's Will Demmell and Northwestern's Brandon Ettl in the first seven minutes of the second half put the Colonial League back in control. Moravian's Ryan Brown and Bangor's Matthew Palmer then added goals in the final 20 minutes to double-up the blue squad of LVC and MVC members.

"I found out by the pamphlet on the scholarly athlete awards assembly," Estrada said of Lions All-Star Soccer Classic. "I asked my coach how you get invited to that and how you play in it because I wanted to play. I'm glad I did."

For Estrada and the rest of the participants, the game went beyond just the final tally. The Catasauqua senior spent his final season competing against the competitive Colonial League for nearly a month and a half. But on Sunday, he was able to team up with those players and take on the presumed favorites from the LVC and MVC.

"It's actually pretty cool to have them on the same team," Estrada said. "You get a lot of opportunities and a lot of good play. It's a lot of good competition."

Following a goal from Pleasant Valley's Ema Sabovic in the girls game that gave the LVC/MVC an early 1-0 advantage, Saucon Valley's Alicia Binn evened the game at 1-1 with a goal of her own 2:15 later.

But after two goals from Offensive MVP Amanda McCarthy of Emmaus, the LVC/MVC squad downed the Colonial League by a 3-1 final score in the event's first game.

East Stroudsburg South's Kelsey Finn was named the Defensive MVP for the LVC/MVP, while Notre Dame East Stroudsburg's Angelica Bertola (Offensive MVP) and Saucon Valley's Victoria Young (Defensive MVP) earned honors on the Colonial League side.

For the boys, Northamptons' Sam Gaye scored two goals and was named the Offensive MVP for LVC/MVC; Parkland's Kyle Stengel was the Defensive MVP. The Colonial League's Mowrey (Offensive MVP) and Matthew Dicker (Defensive MVP) earned honors for their respective sides.

A total of four scholarships were awarded to players who portrayed excellent community service: Pleasant Valley's Dana McAllister, Bethlehem Catholic's Marisa Iannelli, Easton's Matt Semanick and Palmer.
