Coplay off to slow start
History shows that the Coplay Legion baseball team shouldn't be too concerned about a slow start.
Given last year's 4-8 record to begin the season, the team rebounded later in the year, earning a playoff spot and making it all the way to the semifinals. Right now they're 0-5, and with a little luck, some of those losses could have been wins.
Of those five losses, three have been by one run. Manager William Kovolenko said breaking into the win column was simply a matter of getting a few breaks.
To illustrate that point, he pointed to an inning in a recent game against Salisbury. It was 2-2 heading into the seventh inning with Coplay coming to bat. After getting the first two runners on via a walk and a slug bunt base hit, the team looked poised for a big inning with their 3, 4, 5 hitters coming up. However, two pop ups and a strike out ended the threat. They eventually lost the game in the bottom of the inning on Noah Adams' game-winning RBI.
"That's how it is right now," said Kovolenko. "You also have to give the other team their due. We're not playing well enough right now."
He said they also need to hit the ball better to reverse their fortunes. That's an area they'll need to improve moving forward.
Still, he believes they have the players to get them on track. They just seem snake bit at times, and once they get that first win, things will change.
"We have a good team, a very competitive team," he said. "Things just aren't falling our way right now."
Kovolenko said that his pitching staff features a number of good arms. That list includes Austin Dreisbach, Matthew Hassick, Dan Lloyd, Nathan Wechsler, Khristian Polanco and Richard Yost.
They also have some potent bats in the line-up including, Gianni Sinatore, William Kovolenko III, Vincent Cuvo, Tyler Cyriax, Matthew Polanco, Matthew Miller and Nathan Dekorte.
The team also features Brendan Carroll, Anthony Dex, Alexander Galley and William Loy IV.
Kovolenko said that Cuvo, their catcher, is their lead-off hitter and does a really good job in that capacity as well as handling their pitching staff.
"He's pretty good," said Kovolenko.
With the season swiftly approaching the midway point, Kovolenko believes they have what it takes to make a push toward the playoffs. This week they have games against Fullerton, Northern Valley and North Parkland.
"I think we have the players to make a run," he said.
