WESTERN SALISBURY COLUMN Summer, here we come

The end of the 2013-2014 school year is upon us. The seniors are gone, the laptops are all turned in, and the fifth and eighth graders are ready to say goodbye to their current school and looking forward to a new adventure next year.

The last two days of school are early dismissals. On June 12, the Salisbury High School and Salisbury Middle School dismiss 12:15 p.m., while Western Salisbury Elementary and Harry S Truman let out 1 p.m.

On June 13, SHS and SMS dismiss 11 a.m. and WSE and HST close their doors for the summer 11:45 a.m.

As this edition goes to print, I will be watching my son and the rest of the Salisbury High School Class of 2014 cross the stage to graduate. One perk of working for Salisbury Township School District is I am given the opportunity to hand my son his diploma when he graduates. I am honored to be able to do this, but at the same time a little anxious. Anyone who knows me can tell you, I can be a little emotional and weepy. My goal is to keep it together at least for the 30 seconds I am on the stage.

Congratulations one last time to the class of 2014. Report cards for Salisbury Middle School are scheduled to be uploaded to the community portal June 16.

The Salisbury Township park program will begin June 18. Program hours are 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evenings. Children who live in Salisbury Township and have completed kindergarten through age 12 are eligible to participate. Registration forms will be available at each park location. Parks with programs include Green Acres, Lindberg, Devonshire and Laubach. This is a great program to keep our kids outside in the fresh air and not inside playing video games.

There is a school board meeting 7:30 p.m. June 18 at the administration building.

The Devonshire yard waste drop off will be open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 17 and 21. Evening hours are 3 to 6 p.m. June 12 and 23.

As we get ready to enjoy the summer and outdoor activities, I feel compelled to encourage everyone to apply sunscreen before going out in the sun. I learned the hard way after getting a bad sunburn while watching my son's baseball game. After such a cool and rainy spring and sitting at games covered in blankets and umbrellas, I was soaking up the sunshine when we finally had nice weather. I realized I was getting burned and applied sunscreen halfway through the game, but the damage had already been done. Ouch!
