Zephs find early success at LVC tournament

As has been the case all year, the Whitehall boys tennis team made sure their presence was felt once the Lehigh Valley Conference tennis tournament began.

When the tournament opened on May 17, Whitehall had some success in the opening round with No. 1 and No. 2 singles advancing, as well as their No. 2 doubles team.

"We had most our success in the opening rounds," said head coach Austin Berg. "We played some good matches."

The charge was led by No. 1 singles player Islam Ahmed who defeated Dieruff High School's Eric Garcia, 8-4.

Berg said that Ahmed came back to win the match after falling behind. He said Ahmed was able to push through the match and advance to the second round where he was eventually upended by Parkland's Nick Kshatri, 8-0.

In No. 2 singles, Alex Rohn earned a victory over his Husky counterpart, Mario Salibi, 8-3. Rohn later faced Rowan Hobson of Emmaus in the quarterfinal round, losing 8-1.

In No. 3 singles, Berg said that Gavin Meyers just couldn't get on track. He was facing Allentown Central Catholic's Jimmy Vaughn to open their round. Berg said that when the two met earlier in the regular season, Meyers was extremely competitive and was able to battle Vaughn to a tiebreaker in their second set, but on in this match he was perhaps trying to place the ball too much. He lost 8-0.

In No. 2 doubles, the tandem of Reno Honzo-Vasso and Max Nuscher received a bye to begin the tourney. That propelled them into the quarterfinals where they were defeated by the Liberty pair of Luke Conrad and Chris Mapscos, 8-4.

Berg said they played well but just couldn't produce enough winners to make it to the semifinal round.

In No. 3 doubles, Daniel Herrera and Jordan Saliby also played well against their opening round opponents. Berg said the teams were knotted at 4-4 at one point, but the tandem of Justin Ke and Maneesh Weerakkody eventually pulled away for an 8-5 win.

Finally, in No. 4 doubles, Hazam Abdelaal and Harshal Patel lost in the opening round to Nazareth's pair of Nick Ferraro and Garret Snyder, 8-4. Berg said it was a competitive match throughout, but weren't able to get the critical points when needed.

With the season now over, Berg said that this year's biggest challenge was staying consistent. He said that they were competitive in a lot of their matches, but struggled to get the necessary points to close out games. With a roster that's predominantly filled with underclassmen, he believes that will turn around in the future.
