Sinkhole forms on Second St., North Catasauqua

A second sinkhole in two months has surfaced in the 1100 block of Second Street, North Catasauqua.

North Catasauqua Fire Chief Shawn McGinley told The Press he was called to the scene around 8:15 am. May 28 to investigate the sinkhole.

UGI and PPL were also called to the scene. Arch and Buttonwood streets were closed while crews worked on the sinkhole.

"The structures [homes] were pretty stable so we didn't need a full response from the fire department," McGinley said.

Neighbor Denise Thomas of 1105 Second St., said she returned home from work to discover the sinkhole next to her residence.

"It's devastating," she said. "It's kind of scary."

It's believed a broken water and/or sewer line that serviced the home led to the formation of the sinkhole, McGinley said.

McGinley said a vehicle parked at the site was damaged and lost.

A family living in the home in front of the sinkhole was evacuated, McGinley said.

The fire department continues to investigate the matter.
