Rentzheimer earns 20th win of season

Parkland's win over Spring-Ford in the opening round of the PIAA Tournament put the team at 24-0 on the season, but was also a milestone for senior pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer, who recorded her 20th win of the season.

The win was the first in the state tournament by a District 11 champion since Nazareth won a first round game in 2006.

Rentzheimer struck out five, allowed just four hits and didn't walk a batter in the win over Spring-Ford. In the district title game against Pleasant Valley, Rentzheimer didn't allow a baserunner until she had recorded two outs in the sixth inning and that came on her first and only walk of the game. An inning later, she lost the no-hit bid, but rebounded and helped the Lady Trojans record their first District 11 title since 2005.

"I really don't think about a no-hitter," said Rentzheimer. "I just try to go out and win every game just as it is."

Parkland will try to ride Rentzheimer's hot hand the rest of the way and the senior is ready to carry more than her weight for the team, even though, she admits it's been a little difficult at times.

"I'm hurting a little bit these last few days," she said. "I loosened up after [beating Northampton in the district semifinals], ironically. It's just a little shoulder tightness.

"I don't really know what the competition is going to be like, but obviously, they got to the state tournament, so they have to be great teams. I think if we play like we have, we can hang with them."

It's kind of scary to think that softball isn't even Rentzheimer's best sport. In fact, she might not even play softball when she attends the University of Scranton in the fall. Many consider the senior athlete to be even better in volleyball than she is on the softball field, but it's a tough debate since she is so good on both.

Playing on the Parkland volleyball team as a sophomore helped her to establish a rather lofty goal for herself and her team. That was the season that the Lady Trojans won a state title in volleyball and Rentzheimer doesn't want that to be her only one.

"Coming into my senior year, I wanted to have a state championship in both of my sports and this takes me one step closer. It would be great," said Rentzheimer with a big smile.

If Parkland does win states in softball, it would also cap an undefeated season for the team and a sweep of the postseason championships in the league, district and state. You simply can't get much better than that and it would not only make Rentzheimer's dream come true, but would make it that much sweeter.

"It would be great," said Rentzheimer of the possibilities. "We're the only team in the Lehigh Valley that is still playing and didn't lose yet. We just need to stay focused and take the task into our state games."
