CHS holds 146th commencement
Members of the Catasauqua High School Class of 2014 have officially entered the ranks of a long and storied list of alumni.
The 146th commencement ceremony was held Monday evening in the high school gymnasium.
Parents, family, friends, alumni and school officials were present to watch 119 graduates proudly walk across the stage to receive their diplomas.
Kanyi Creppy, selected as a speaker by his classmates, spoke about the past. He asked the Class of 2014 to recall their time spent at Sheckler Elementary School, Catasauqua Middle School and CHS.
"It is important to learn from the past," he said. "I hope we can all use the lessons we learned."
Student-selected speaker Tyler Correll asked the graduates to relish what they have achieved, but to spend the next few months enjoying the moment.
"That's why we're here tonight, to cherish the moment," he said. "I ask that you spend the next three months living in the present."
Salutatorian Tyler Mullin spoke on the future, reminding the graduates to always maintain hope.
"Hope never leaves us," he said. "Hope gives us strength to keep working hard. Never abandon hope."
Valedictorian Rachel Sell bid the class goodbye.
"This farewell will be the most meaningful," she said. "Don't take this farewell negatively. Strive to achieve your dreams."
CHS Principal David Ascani noted the many talents and accomplishments of the Class of 2014, from academics to sports.
"You have been absolutely a fantastic group of students the last four years," he said.
District Superintendent Robert Spengler asked the new graduates to embrace their time as students in the Catasauqua Area School District.
"You have been blessed to be part of a small community," he said. "It's a blessing and gift you will appreciate."
Matthew Trust, selected by the faculty to give the benediction, emphasized the importance of an education. Before giving the benediction, Trust captured the senior's last moment together by taking a cell phone photo on the stage of the graduates.
"Blessed are those who seek an education, for they shall succeed in life," he said.
After the graduates walked across the stage to receive their degrees, they formed The Grand Catty Line standing in rows on each side of the gym and excitedly tossing their mortarboards in the air.
Graduates will go on to a four year university or college, two year college or trade school, serve in the military and enter the workforce.
The Class of 2014 will attend such schools as Franklin & Marshall College, Boston University, Liberty University, Moravian College, Muhlenberg College, Penn State University, Temple University, Villanova University and Wagner College.
