Wanderers aim for playoffs
It's been four years since the Wanderers have reached the NORCO playoffs, but Dwight Pulieri hopes that will change once this summer's regular season comes to an end.
The Wanderers (2-1) have expectations of reaching the postseason and Pulieri thinks that this year's group can do that with the upgraded experience they have on the field, as well as an influx of new players.
"I'd say we'd be disappointed if we didn't make the playoffs," said Pulieri, who enters his 28th year managing the team. "The biggest obstacle for us is fielding a consistent team every night. These kids have so many different things pulling them in different directions every week, that getting a consistent lineup is really crucial."
The Wanderers finished 5-15 last year, but with Lehigh West Bethlehem not fielding a team this year, the Wanderers and Jeffs benefit from having those players come to their sides this year.
"We had three teams in Bethlehem and it was ludicrous," he said. "I think both of us [Jeffs] will be much more competitive this year."
Pulieri will rely on Liberty players Mike Mittl (OF), Logan Steidinger (C) and Tyler Lutseo (3B/1B) to spearhead the team this year.
Graduated players Josh Nales (P/CF) and Sean Wrobel (OF) are two of the veteran leaders on the team at 19-years-old.
"We want to compete every game and I think we'll be able to do that because we have guys with varsity experience," he said. "We didn't have that last year. NORCO is basically varsity baseball and when you don't have guys with experience, it shows."
The Wanderers lost to Bath 5-2 on Sunday for their first defeat of the season. They take on Hellertown on Thursday in their final contest of the week.
