Hawks champs again
Bethlehem Catholic won its second consecutive District 11 title after defeating Wilson, 5-0, last week at Pates Park.
Becahi pitcher, Elyse Cuttic, gave up only three hits in the district final, striking out nine.
The Hawks scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jean Markovic's RBI single scored Emily Brandstetter, who hit a triple to start the inning.
Brandstetter said, "I took a couple because I wanted to get a strike, and I knew [Wilson pitcher, Madison Oren] had a good change up. I actually waited on it, and I hit it down the left field line."
The Hawks scored two more runs in the fifth inning, and Brooke Rau hit a two-run home run in the sixth.
"Hitting is contagious," said Brandstetter.
The Warriors threatened in the seventh inning with runners on second and third.
"We were up 5-0 so at that point, [Coach Rich Mazza] said to just get the outs. He got a little nervous, but he always says we're fighters," Brandstetter said. "Our pitcher did a really good job because she's from Wilson and knows a lot of those girls. They had two hits in the beginning, but it didn't rattle her at all. She stayed strong."

The Hawks won a state playoff, extra-inning thriller on Monday afternoon at Parkland, 3-2.
Up 1-0 in the seventh, errors cost the girls and Lampeter-Strasburg, the District 3 champ, tied it 1-1. The visitors took a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth before the Hawks rallied in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Brandstetter was hit by a pitch and Cuttic followed with a double to left that scored Brandstetter, with Cuttic moving to third on the throw. Pinch runner Kaitlyn Lazicky scored on an error to give the Hawks the win.
Julia Madison scored the Hawks first run after she tripled. Madison would come home on a fielder's choice bunt from Angelys Cotto.
The girls will play Radnor, the District 1 champ, on Thursday.
