The Backyard Homesteading Series, sponsored by Penn State Extension, is offering three, three-hour programs starting in early June to the beginning of July with an extra Canning 101 workshop at the beginning of August.
Classes include Crafting Beer 101, Grow Longer: Extending the Growing Season and Canning 101.
Crafting Beer 101 will be offered 1-4 p.m. June 7 at the new Funk Brewery, Emmaus.
The class will cover the basics of brewing beer starting from growing grains and hops all the way through the brewing and bottling.
Grow Longer: Extending the Growing Season will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 12 at Red Cat Farm, Germansville.
Grow Longer will give an overview of different structures permitting produce to grow longer, as well as highlight the costs and benefits of the different methods.
Learn how to plant crops for fall, early spring and winter.
Tour of Red Cat Farm to see all these structures in use on a working farm.
Canning 101 will be provided over two sessions.
One will be June 26; the other will take place Aug. 7 at the Miller Family Building at Cedar Crest College, Allentown.
In the first workshop, learn how to preserve high-acid foods with water bath canning.
Can salsa and jam and take some of the canned goods home.
The second workshop will cover pressure canning and preserving. Learn how to safely can low-acid foods, such as vegetables or meats, in a pressure canner.
There will be a demo on how to make sauerkraut and learn how to use a food dehydrator.
