New teachers in classrooms this fall

Several new faces will be at the head of the class this fall in the Northampton Area School District.

None of the teachers hired will fill a new position in the district.

The school board voted unanimously 9-0 at the May 5 meeting to approve the hiring of Bernadette Rabel as a biology teacher at Northampton Area High School, effective Aug. 18. Her salary will be $55,563, with benefits, based on a master's degree and Step 8, per the collective bargaining agreement between the district and Northampton Area Education Association.

The school board also voted unanimously 9-0 at the April 28 meeting to approve the hiring of Amanda Rogers, art teacher at Borough Elementary Schools, effective Aug. 18. Her salary will be $49,294, with benefits, based on a bachelor's +15 degree and Step 5, per the collective bargaining agreement between the district and NAEA.

Also approved was Pamela Hayford, special education teacher at NAHS, effective Aug. 18 for the 2014-15 school year. Her salary will be $46,050, with benefits, based on a bachelor's degree and Step 1, per the collective bargaining agreement between the district and NAEA.

Cullen Mentzell, mathematics teacher at Washington's Crossing, was approved as well, effective Aug. 18. His salary will be $46,050, with benefits, based on a bachelor's degree and Step 1, per the collective bargaining agreement between the district and NAEA.

Also approved 9-0 at the April 28 meeting was Carol Cunningham as acting principal of the Lehigh Elementary School, effective retroactively from Feb. 26 through April 29 for a stipend of $2,500.

At the April 14 meeting, the board voted 8-0 to approve Felicity Hahn-Panovec, 12-month school psychologist, effective July 1. Her annual salary will be $67,000, with benefits, and in accordance with the Act 93 Agreement.

In other business at the May 5 board meeting, school directors voted by voice vote to approve Anne Bauder, an unpaid FMLA childrearing leave, with benefits, per federal government regulations, May 23-June 10.

Also, at May 5 meeting, the board voted 9-0 to approve the revised listing of student summer help, along with a compensation rate of $7.25 per hour, effective for summer of 2014. The listing denotes students who are pending receipt of acceptable clearances.

The board also approved attendance of Mr. Dimmick, Mrs. Grammes, Dr. Kuhns, and Ms. Welsh at the Pennsylvania Positive Behavior Support Implementers' Forum, May 28, 29 in Hershey, at an approximate cost of $1,442.28, which is included in the 2013-14 board approved curriculum budget.

Extra-curricular staff members and stipends for the 2013-14 school year were additionally approved including Krista Maxwell, Environmental Club co-advisor, Moore Elementary School, Aug. 26, 2013 to Feb. 26 (on leave beginning Feb. 27), $254.52, and Karen Grube, Environmental Club co-advisor, Moore Elementary School, 2013-14 school year, $586.09;

The board also approved Mrs. Mateyak and six students to travel to New York City May 12. Transportation will be paid by the students. The cost to the district will not exceed $100. Costs to the district area included in the board-approved 2013-14 curriculum budget.

Also approved was the voluntary transfer of Richard Smith from middle shift custodian to day shift working head custodian at Lehigh Elementary School, effective Aug. 22 and April Halleman, floating custodian, effective May 19. Her rate of pay will be $16.54 per hour, 80 percent of the hourly rate, with benefits, in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between NASD and Teamsters Local 773.
