Another car accident leads to guardrail
Another vehicle accident at the Newport Avenue and Lumber Street intersection has prompted Northmpton Borough to install a guardrail at the corner to prevent damage to a home located at the site.
Borough Manager Gene Zarayko informed council at last Thursday's meeting of the recent vehicle accident. He said it is the third such incident that has taken place at the intersection over an undetermined period of time.
Zarayko said the accident "caused considerable damage and a power shortage to the neighborhood."
In other business, Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Sr. reported the addition to the borough fire station is on schedule.
The concrete floor inside the building on Lerchenmiller Drive has been poured. The block wall for the meeting room has also been constructed.
Aug. 2 is the tentative date for a dedication of the fire station addition.
Also during the meeting, a few seats remain for the Northampton Recreation Center bus trip Harrah's Casino June 4, according to Councilman Anthony Lopsonzski Jr. The bus trip is the second fundraiser to a casino held by the recreation center. Jason Kremus, recreation center director, can be contacted for further information.
Zarayko said the fire department's Spring Thaw Rendevious held May 3 at the borough park "appears to be a huge success."
Zarayko said the borough is awaiting final accounting on how much money was raised for the fire department. The event brought in hundreds of motorcycles for a full day of activities and bike run.
The fire department is the recipient of a $450 stipend from the Edelweis Haus on Main Street, which held a specialty bingo benefiting the fire department.
The Atlas Cement Memorial Museum continues to draw visitors from abroad. LeRoy Brobst, assistant to the manager, recently served as a tour guide and said a man from Australia visiting the area wanted to tour the museum. The museum is located in a wing of the borough hall on Laubach Avenue.
