Simmons wins 110, 300

Bethlehem Catholic's Donovan West was uncertain about his 2014 season after being sidelined with a hamstring injury earlier this year. The junior wasn't sure if he'd be able to make a comeback this spring.

West was able to compete again this season, although he admits his hamstring is only 90 percent healed, and come back even better as he suffered his first loss of the season at the league meet two weeks ago and finished second in the 200 meter dash last week at the District 11 track and field meet at East Stroudsburg South High School to qualify for states.

Along with West, who ran a 22.94 in the event, Freddie Simmons and the Golden Hawks' boys' 4x400 meter relay team of Sean Moroney, Mike Duffy, John Spirk and Simmons also qualified for the PIAA meet, which will be held May 22 and 23 at Shippensburg University.

Shaina Palmer was the lone state qualifier for Freedom.

Being beat by Shane Simpson of Easton two weeks ago really pushed West last week.

"Honestly, all I wanted was revenge today. That was the first time I got beat all year and it hurt. I carried it with me and it just pushed me to work hard," said West.

Simpson was beat by Demetrius Lanier of East Stroudsburg South, but got his revenge over Simpson as the Red Rover finished fourth.

Simpson battled with West all spring long, but he battled with another Golden Hawk last fall, Simmons. The three-sport junior had two individual first-place finishes, one in the 300- and the other in the 110- meter hurdles.

Even though it was a golden time for Simmons at the two-day district meet, he was not having too much fun leading up to it.

"I got sick on Sunday," Simmons said. "On Monday I went to the doctors and got some antibiotics. Tuesday was the first day I started feeling better. So Wednesday was my only real day of practice before this. I still don't even feel 100 percent."

Freedom's Palmer was trying to just get the qualifying time in the AAA 3200 meter run, which is 11:13.30. The junior shocked herself with her second-place finish and time of 11:11.80, which bested her old personal record of 11:26.

"I'm still kind of shocked that I got to states. I am really happy that I medaled and made it on time, instead of just qualifying on my time. It is an awesome feeling."

The Bethlehem Catholic boys' 4x400 meter relay squad earned gold with a time of 3:24.94 to add a few more Golden Hawks to the trip to Ship.
