Hawks get unlikely bid to postseason

Bethlehem Catholic's volleyball team had a second chance at life this season, as the Golden Hawks took on Schuylkill Valley Monday night in the quarterfinals of the District III/XI 2A subregionals.

Unfortunately, that came to an end following a loss in four games 25-27, 10-25, 25-22, 12-25. The loss came after Becahi beat Brandywine Heights last week to advance to the subregional quarterfinals.

Becahi got the bid to the postseason despite having a 5-11 record this season. Since District 11 has only a handful of volleyball teams in their 2A classification, the Hawks had the highest power rating and qualified despite not having a .500 record overall or in the league.

Head coach Jarred Kostic didn't know of these circumstances until a week before the District III tournament, giving the Hawks a surprise berth into the postseason.

"The boys were excited about all this," Kostic said. "It wasn't the season any of us have hoped for but this put a little fire in them. District III teams aren't particularly happy about the automatic berth, so we need to stay focused and play really well. "Against Brandywine, we played extremely well. We played as a team, we played with pride and a sense of urgency. It was a match the boys themselves needed to witness themselves. As long as everyone does their part we can compete with the best of them and maybe get a couple of wins on the way."

The Hawks knocked off Brandywine Heights in the opening round of the tournament in four games (27-25, 25-10, 22-25, 25-12) to fan flames on Kostic's statement of D-III teams not being happy with the Hawks inclusion of the tournament.

A victory on Monday night would have advanced the Hawks to the PIAA tournament, since District III sends four teams to states.

While Becahi keeps playing, Freedom ended their season last Friday, losing to Northampton in the District 11 quarterfinal round in a three-game sweep, ending their season with an 11-8 mark.
