LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Eight go to states

Some teenagers get a part-time job to save money in order to purchase their first car, others are lucky enough to be given one for a birthday present.

Liberty's Denzel Vereen will be adjusting the rear-view mirror in his 2006 Audi car this week as the senior received a new car from his mother, for simply qualifying for states at last week's District 11 track and field meet.

The two-year track athlete can drive his new set of wheels all the way to Shippensburg University as he, along with Kaylin West, Darius Jones, Jaylyn Aminu, Casey Harewood and Rachel Finn, all qualified for the PIAA meet this week on May 22 and 23.

Vereen qualified by earning silver in shot put with a throw of 47-08 at the meet, held at East Stroudsburg High School, which punched his ticket to the state meet as the top two finishers in each event automatically qualify as well as any other competitors who's time or mark fall within the qualifying parameters.

The 5-6, 210-pound Vereen regrets not coming out for track sooner.

"I wish I would have done it earlier. I think that if I did it for four years, I'd have so many more opportunities. I didn't even think about doing it earlier, but I should've. This is the first sport I played."

Harewood is a four-year track athlete and has made the state meet all four seasons. The senior earned her trip this spring by earning her third district title with a gold-medal performance in girls' high jump, with a height of 5-04.

One of Liberty's two multi-medal winners is Jones, who earned two bronze medals while qualifying in both events, the triple jump and long jump.

The junior said he didn't treat districts any differently.

"I just treated it like another meet. I tried to not make it a big deal and just focused on what I had to do out there and it worked out."

West and Finn both donned silver medals in their respective field events. West jumped 17-11.5 in the long jump and Finn reached 11-06 in pole vault.

Aminu is making her first trip to states this week. She will be competing in the 100 meter dash after her first-place finish at districts last week.

The freshman has a specific plan on how she will prepare for the last meet of the season.

"I have to practice and practice. I need to calm myself down and pray. Also, I'll call my brother, talking to him always calms me down. I will listen to my music to calm me down that day as well. I just need to stay focused and calm."
