Sarah Segan has been in a lot of pressure situations throughout her first few years at Northwestern Lehigh High School. The junior has made plays in league and district championship games as well as played state playoff games as a member of the girls soccer team. She even has medals to show how she succeeded in those situations.

Even with all of that experience, Segan admitted that she couldn't stop thinking about the Colonial League track and field meet last week at the Zephyr Sports Complex at Whitehall High School.

"I was really scared for this meet actually," she said. "I was so psyched about it for a week because I was so nervous. I knew it was going to be a hard day and I just wanted to try my best."

She gave it her all at the league meet of her inaugural track season and came out with a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.17, a new personal best.

Segan also set another best at the meet as the second leg of the 4x800 relay squad that includes Sabrina Mertz, Rachele Cerrone and Haley Yost. The group grabbed gold in the event with at time of 9:36.46, which set a new meet record. The old mark of 9:41.34 was held by Southern Lehigh since 1986.

The Tigers' other two girls relay squads also navigated their way to the medal stand. The 1600-meter relay team of Madeline Peery, Cerrone, Segan and Mertz won with a time of 4:10.67. The 4x100 relay squad of Amy Everett, Sabrina Mertz, Mckenzi Divers and Lauren Anderson finished second.

Aside from her membership in the relay squads, Haley Yost keeps herself busy at track meets. The senior competes in multiple individual events such as the 3200-, 1600- and 800-meter runs, all of which she medaled in at last week's two-day league meet.

Yost finished first with a time of 5:12.92 in the 1600-meter run and earned gold in the 800-meter run. She settled for silver in the 3200 with a time of 11:43.92.

With so much on her plate, Yost has to focus in for districts.

"I have been training for the mile mainly, so going into districts I am aiming for a five-minute mile," Yost said. "I also want to help my 4x800 team get to states. Also, maybe I'd like to see how far I can get with the 800. My big goal though is the mile and that has been my big focus all year."

Trista Cunningham was in those pressure moments with Segan in other sports, but the senior also admitted nervousness for her final league track meet.

Just like Segan, Cunningham fought through it and tossed a 115-7 in discus, beating her previous personal best of 113, on her way to a gold medal.

"It is honestly amazing," said Cunningham, who was the top seed in the event. "I got what I was hoping to get and I couldn't have asked for anything better. I am really thankful that I did so well today."

The three-sport senior also took bronze in girls shot put at 35-05 and finished fourth in long jump.

Alexis Gawelko grabbed gold in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.08 and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles. Cerrone finished second in the 800-meter run. Kari Schultheis tied for third in pole vault and Hanna Masenheimer finished fourth in shot put to collect more team points.
