LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Roughs eye D-11 meet

Ty Kern is aiming for a jump of 13-6. He has been working toward it all season and is still trying to achieve that as that is the qualifying height for the state meet.

Last week, Kern had to settle for a height of 12-9 at the Colonial League track and field meet held at the Zephyr Sports Complex at Whitehall High School, but that still earned the senior a bronze medal and a spot in this week's district meet.

Kern's 12-9 was a personal best, but he was trying for more.

"My first jump was terrible, as I was really nervous, but I made it. My second was a little better. After I made that, I was ready and got 12-9. I tried to get 13-3, but got really anxious and it fell apart there."

As Kern, who is in his third and final year of track, is trying to get to Shippensburg for the state meet. Someone who knows a little about competing with the state's best, Paryss Marshall, had a successful stint at the two-day meet.

The senior, who is in his first year as a member of the Rough Rider track and field team, earned silver in the boys' high jump at a height of six foot and took fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.29.

Marshall, who will be playing football for Shippensburg University in the fall, said after his fourth place finish that competition is a motivator.

"Running against some of the top people in the state makes it hard for you to go in thinking you have a chance. You just have to go out there and run your hardest against them and see what happens. Today I was able to get fourth place."

Dakoha Zelinsky was able to take a bronze medal from girls' discus as she earned it with a toss of 92-02.

Zelinsky's classmate Richard Houser finished fifth twice at the league meet, once on the track and once on the field. In the field, he took fifth in triple jump at 43-01. Houser was also a member of Catty's 4x100 meter relay team, along with Ra'Von Burton, Marshall and Nicholas Rossnagle, that took fifth place with a time of 45.07.

Trinity Henderson also represented the Lady Rough Riders on the medal stand as the junior finished second with a distance of 36-11 in girls' shot put.

Henderson wasn't too thrilled with her second place finish, however.

"I just go in there and give it my best," she admitted. "Maybe today I could have done a little bit better. I gave it all I could. This definitely is a big motivator for me for districts and even next year."
