Javelin sweep leads Trojan boys to meet championship

The Parkland Trojan boys track team won the 2014 Lehigh Valley Conference track and field meet championship.

It was due in large part to the efforts of Derek Ziegenfuss, Stephen Laird and Nicholas Hassler in boys javelin.

That trio of Trojans swept the medal stand at last week's LVC track and field meet, held at the Zephyr Sports Complex at Whitehall High School. Parkland's Ryan Hunt finished fifth in the event as the group collectively earned 33 points for its squad and catapulted them to a second straight LVC meet title.

"I think it is amazing," Hassler said of Parkland occupying every slot on the medal stand. "We have worked so hard all year and we knew we had the capability to sweep this type of event."

Ziegenfuss grabbed gold with a throw of 180 feet, 2 inches. Laird took silver at 173-8, and Hassler donned bronze after a throw of 171-3.

Kareem Williams is used to helping a team to a championship. He did his part last week as the senior took silver in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.59 and finished third in the 110 meter hurdles.

Despite the accolades, the senior believes he has more conditioning work to do.

"My body is not where I want it to be," he said. "I'm nowhere close. If I had to grade my body right now, I'd give it a C-plus. They say you are supposed to be the hardest on yourself and that is definitely true with me. A C-plus is not a passing grade for me. I have more work to do."

Legend Boyesen earned the Trojans some team points with a gold-medal finish in boys' discus with a throw of 138-2. He also tied for fifth in the high jump.

Several other Trojan boys chipped in some team points. Michael Aboulhouda finished fourth in shot put. Junior Joseph Hawkins had two fourth-place finishes, in the 300- and the 110-meter hurdles. Jacob Kappes finished second in pole vault at 12-3.

Junior Lady Trojan Avery Semler, along with senior Stephanie Panny tried their best to mimic the boys javelin results in girls shot put, but the ladies couldn't get a third teammate on the medal stand. Semler took bronze with a throw of 34-6.25 and Panny threw a new personal best 38-7 to win gold.

Panny also earned gold in discus with a throw of 101-11.

She enjoyed grabbing two gold medals, but knows this heightens the expectations for the future.

"It just drives my harder," she said. "Now people are going to expect a good showing out of me. So it is just going to push me harder to do better at districts and it also gives my confidence a big boost."
