Girls stay perfect with win over Emmaus
A quick flurry of goals put the Parkland girls lacrosse team ahead. The Trojans built upon that early cushion throughout the remainder of the game for an 18-7 win in the Lehigh Valley Conference final last Monday night at Andrew Leh stadium at Nazareth High School. The teams earns its second straight LVC title.
"It feels good because we've been working hard all season," said senior Kelsey Carlon. "We did what we wanted to do and played the exact game we wanted to play."
Just a few minutes after being crowned league MVP, Sophia Castillo teamed with Carlon to net four goals in under five minutes to open up the game with a 4-0 advantage. The goals were scored on the Trojans first four shots.
Emmaus never got closer than three goals the remainder of the game thanks to the stout play of the Trojans' defensive unit, including Sage Barnett, Kristen McCarty, Abby Miller, Sydney Ahdieh and goalkeeper Molly Diamondstein (12 saves).
The game was all but put away in the final minute of the first half. Leading 6-2 after a Dakota Walck goal gave the Green Hornets some life heading into the locker room, Castillo worked some of her magic and put two into the back of the net within 48 seconds of each other. Parkland went into the locker room up by six goals.
"We were sitting here watching the boys game and saw that they came back against Easton, so we knew anybody could come back at any time," said Carlon. "They could have done that to us so we needed to keep our momentum and stay level-headed and just keep playing our game."
The Trojans kept playing their game on both sides of the ball in the second half, just as they did in an unblemished regular season.
Mackenzie Galli (two goals), Lexi Rice (two goals, one assist), Anna Emerick (one goal, two assists), Sarah Stagaard (one goal, two assists), and Cathleen Gaffney (one goal) all recorded points for the Trojans to go along with Castillo (six goals, four assists) and Carlon (five goals, one assist).
Parkland will now have some time off before entering the District 11 tournament as the top seed. There is not much that an undefeated conference champion can do to improve, but losing 9-7 in last year's district final is something many of the Trojans have not forgotten.
"We just need to keep getting reps on goal and work on our defense," added Carlon. "Everything that we did well tonight, we need to keep improving."
The Trojans have a first-round bye in districts They will open play Tuesday with a semifinal match up against the winner of Thursday's No. 4 Nazareth-No. 5 Moravian Academy game. Tuesday's game is slated for 7 p.m. at Emmaus.
