Borough allows communities use of band trailer

The Borough of Northampton is receptive to area communities requesting use of the borough's band trailer for summer functions.

Borough Manager Gene Zarayko and council said South Whitehall Township's request to borrow the band trailer for an event has an unusual ring to it because the trailer belonged to the township years ago.

Although the band trailer lacks the modernity of Whitehall Township's band trailer, it serves its purpose by allowing band performances, shows or pageants, including the borough's Christmas tree lighting program at Main Street and Laubach Avenue.

Council agreed to grant South Whitehall Township's request to borrow the band trailer July 18, with a rain date of Aug. 11. Zarayko said the township borrowed the trailer in the past.

Pursuant to the agreement, South Whitehall will pay the borough the normal setup and delivery fee, along with a $100 per day rental fee.

The Hammerhead Lounge on Main Street was approved to borrow the band trailer for an outdoor party June 7. Councilman Ed Pany said the business located in the borough pays taxes.

"In the past private organizations needed to pay delivery and setup fees along with a $100 per day rental fee," Zarayko said. "They also have to provide the borough with a copy of their insurance certificate naming the borough additionally insured."

Borough Solicitor William McCarthy voiced no objections to the arrangement.

Council rejected Northampton Liederkranz's request for the band trailer for its annual Summer Fest Aug. 16. The club used the trailer previously for its 100th anniversary.

"Unfortunately, it is not available on that date because we had previously approved its use to the Christ United Church of Christ," Zarayko said.

Council did not object the Liederkranz's request to close off Siegfried Avenue, between Eighth Street and Bridge Alley, next to the club, from noon to 9 p.m.

The band trailer will also be in use at the municipal park in July when the Northampton Exchange Club holds its Community Days event.
