Bethlehem Catholic will make the move to 3A

Bethlehem Catholic's wrestling program will make the jump to class 3A pending PIAA approval later this month.

District 11 held a unanimous vote to allow the Golden Hawks to move up from 2A after the school had sought the change.

Becahi has won the last four PIAA 2A team titles and felt that a new challenge was needed for the program.

"It's challenging our program to go into 3A," said Becahi athletic director Mike Grasso. "What else is there for us to prove in the 2A classification at the moment? We feel very strong about competing at this level and it's been something we've talked about for awhile now."

With the plan coming to fruition, the Hawks can now test their mettle against the likes of Easton, Liberty, Parkland, Nazareth and Northampton in the postseason. Head coach Jeff Karam is excited for the opportunity to challenge the program to an even higher degree for the next two seasons.

"I know that we'll have to work even harder in the offseason to have success next year," said Karam. "It's a great challenge for all of us and we're excited for the opportunity."

For Karam, the move up a class has helped reinvigorate his enthusiasm for the program. The Hawks steam rolled their way to the District 11 2A and PIAA 2A crowns last year in anti-climactic fashion, as Becahi was the unanimous pick to run away with both team titles.

Now, uncertainty about how they'll fare in each of the 3A team tournaments brings uncertainty and intrigue for a program that looks to compete against the best.

"I kind of feel re-energized," said Karam. "I'm a 3A guy to begin with. I wrestled at Easton, coached at Freedom and always enjoyed the 3A competition. We'll embrace the challenge and hopefully we can compete and make it to team states and get a shot at beating some of the programs from other districts."
