'Canes knock off BC

One rain delay and an end-of-game rainfall didn't stop the Liberty Hurricanes from defeating Bethlehem Catholic 7-6 on Saturday, knocking the Hawks out of the LVC Softball Tournament, which will be played this week.

"Every time we get to play Beca, no matter what the circumstances are, the intensity is always up," said Liberty third baseman, Emily Cecchini.

Becahi had a 1-0 lead, heading into the bottom of the third inning when rain and thunder forced a 30-minute delay.

"Especially after the rain break, it was important to come out strong," Cecchini said.

Liberty's Reyna Dejesus singled before Mariah Kondravy hit a double to left field. Next, Cecchini swung at the first pitch, only to knock it over the right field fence, giving the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead.

"I knew I hit it really, really well. I was pretty ecstatic to just come back out after the rain and start like that, especially because it was Beca," said Cecchini.

Although the Hawks scored a run in the fourth inning, Lauren Epsaro's RBI double and Nicole Iasiello's RBI single made the score 5-2 Liberty.

Becahi began a seventh inning comeback, scoring four runs in the rain.

Cecchini said, "There was no place to wipe our hands, and [pitcher] Deb [Renner] had nowhere to wipe her hands, so I was a little nervous at the end, but as a team, we came together."

It was hardly a one, two, three inning as three outs were hard to come by for the Hurricanes. The Hawks ended up leaving the bases loaded.

"It was important that we stayed calm. We definitely wanted to finish [despite the rain]. Especially for the seniors, it was the last time we'll play Beca, so it was exhilarating in the sense that it was nice to beat them," said Cecchini.

While Liberty will play in the LVC playoffs, Becahi and Freedom will have a week off to get ready for districts.

Last Thursday, Freedom celebrated senior day with a 3-0 victory over the Hurricanes. Shayla Peterson went the distance and allowed just four hits in the victory.

Becahi edged Freedom back on May 6, 2-1.
