Zephs win streak snapped by NHS

Whitehall's win streak of seven straight was snapped Monday night to Northampton during a three-game sweep (16-25, 26-28, 17-25) by the K-Kids. The loss halted an impressive streak by the Zephyrs, who swept all their teams during the run, except for a five game match against Bethlehem Catholic over the past three weeks. Monday's defeat was the first time Whitehall (10-6, 7-5) tasted defeat since losing to Emmaus on April 14.

It was the second loss to Northampton (13-1, 9-1) this season for Whitehall, but head coach George Cowitch took some important lessons from the battle.

"We took away two things," said Cowitch from Monday's loss. "Northampton is really good, and so are we. Match ups were not good for us in game one. Game two we switched them, and we had a 23-16 lead, and couldn't finish. It also shows me we can win with our best hitter on the shelf right now with an ankle injury."

Thomas Harrison is out for Whitehall in the meantime, but will be back for districts to give the Zephyrs an added offensive punch.

Whitehall could have used that extra hitter on Monday against the K-Kids, but Cowitch isn't one to dwell on losses.

"We were disappointed by the way we played after dropping game two," he said. "We've moved on from that and we're concerned about getting better for districts and getting a healthy Harrison back. When we are full strength, we can compete with anyone, but that is not an excuse for what we did Monday.

"The effort needs to be there from everyone, and we need to put a full game together offensively and defensively. That is going to happen, these guys are too good for it not to. We need to do it at the right time, and district play is the time."

Whitehall held their senior night festivities against Nazareth (2-11, 1-10) last night, past Press deadlines, but face their last challenge of the regular season Friday night against Parkland (10-2, 9-1)

The Trojans swept Whitehall the first time around this season and Cowitch wants his team to focus on their game-plan heading into the finale.

"When this team plays with emotion, or "plays angry", they play their best," he said. "As a coaching staff, we stress that daily, and they have to make the choice to play that way. Again, the feeling is right when you are around these guys, they will respond when it matters most.

"Against Parkland, we can't worry about whose on the other side of the net. Once the guys decide to fully do so, it will be fun to watch, win or lose."

Whitehall will not be in the Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs, as Parkland, Emmaus, Northampton and Easton have solidified the four LVC spots.

The opening round of district play is slated for May 15.
