Tryouts set to take place

The Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup baseball team will look to get back to the finals this year as they open up another slate of spring tryouts this week.

The LV team will hold their initial meeting before tryouts at 8:30 pm on May 8 at Billera Hall at DeSales University. The first two tryouts will be held at DeSales on May 11 and 18 at 9am.

General Manager and coach, J.F. Pirro, hopes for another lucrative season with the franchise, as they boast the highest winning percentage of any franchise in the Phillies-sponsored event.

"We want the best players in this tournament," said Pirro. "If you're one of the elite players in the area, you should be playing on this team. We put our best kids out there against all the other franchises and it's a great experience for all the kids."

Lehigh Valley opens play on June 12 at 12:30 p.m. against Burlington County (NJ) at the newly renovated Ashburn Field at FDR Park.

Details regarding tryouts and the process will take place at the meeting on May 8, but there is no denying the relevance the Lehigh Valley has had at this tournament in 21 years of competition.

The franchise boasts the best winning percentage (. 640) of any team and has won three championships. The LV team reached the finals last year, but lost to Mercer County 9-2 at Citizens Bank Park.

Pirro hopes that this year's team can get back to where they were a year ago and hopefully add a fourth title to their hardware.

"We've established ourselves as good competition in the tournament," he said. "We always try to go forward and hope that we can improve upon what we did a year ago."
