LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Track teams end successful season

Head coach Scott Levan was uncertain as to how his track and field team would fare this season with the lack of proper preparation they had due to the weather.

Somehow, someway, despite the obstacles, Levan, who is in his 30th year piloting the Trojan track team, led his boys team to a perfect 9-0 record, which earned it the Lehigh Valley Conference dual-meet championship, while the girls completed an outstanding 8-1 season.

"I thought this season was going to be a little iffy," Levan said. "If I was a weather forecaster, I would have said this season would have been a disaster because a lot of times our training was threatened or eliminated because of the different weather.

"Considering all the obstacles we had to go through, I think they did really well as a team."

Levan noted that both the boys and girls teams each improved as the year went along with the girls' only loss coming in their season opening meet.

There was a lot of success expected by the Parkland coaching staff for some athletes, but according to Levan, one sophomore really stepped up and surprised them.

"Dan Kyvelos, who is ranked third in the 3200-meter run at leagues, has improved greatly," Levan said. "He really has been our young surprise this season. I'd also say Derek Ziegenfuss and Nick Hassler have done well this spring."

Those athletes, along with many others, will try to show their best at the LVC meet which is held at Whitehall High School on May 6 and 7. See next week's edition of The Press for full coverage of the meet.

Along with Kyvelos, Legend Boyesen was the top seed in boys' discus. Hassler was seeded first in boys' javelin. Kareem Williams was the second seed in boys' 300 meter hurdles and fourth in the 110 meter hurdles. Parkland's boys' 4x400 meter relay squad was the top seed in its event.

For the Lady Trojans, Stephanie Panny earned the top seed in both girls discus and girls shot put. Avery Semler had the second seed in girls' shot put. Emily Wilcox was the second seed in the girls' 400 meter dash and Mikayla Stoudt was the third seed in the girls' 1600 meter run.

With the track and field postseason getting underway, Levan said there is nothing he needs to do to motivate his athletes.

"As a coaching staff there is nothing we do or tell them," he said. "Each week we just try to get better and next week, when districts come around, we start telling them what they need to do in order to get states. As a coaching staff, we just want them to get better."
