Parkland boys edge WHS for LVC title
As soon as Isaiah Carey took second place in the high jump, the Zephyrs boys track team could see the finish line, and with it a chance to vanquish the Trojans and gain a share of the league championship.
They had one more event to run, the 4x400 relay, and were now ahead by a point, 73-72. With their foursome of J.C. Falcon, Andrew Frisch, Kurt Koehler and Brian Plucinsky on track to derail their nemesis, they could just about taste victory.
Head coach Jim Sebesta said that they were poised to accomplish that goal, winning every leg until a Trojan runner made contact with Andrew Frisch, knocking him off stride. Sebesta said the force sent Frisch into an adjacent lane. By the time he recovered, the Parkland runner surged ahead, dashing the Zephyrs dream of a league title.
That incident allowed the Trojans to win the race and the meet 77-73, handing the Zephyr boys their second loss of the season.
Sebesta felt that the contact was an infraction. He felt that he should have been disqualified. His protestation went unheeded and the Trojans remained the victors.
"That was disheartening to say the least," said Sebesta. "We worked too hard to have it come down to that."
Sebesta said that the official was reluctant to make a call, and that video footage would have supported his claim. Moreover, he was saddened by that fact that his team, who worked so hard in the off-season and during the year, was denied their chance at victory by an infraction.
"Those kids worked hard for nine months," said Sebesta. "And to lose like that because someone wouldn't make a call?"
Still, he was elated with their effort. The boys came out ready to take the Trojans down. They came out fast and furious, winning nine events. The girls also put up a valiant fight, but were overwhelmed by the numbers, losing 94-56.
"The kids did really well," said Sebesta. "They ran their hearts out. I was really happy with them."
Leading the charge was Kyleem Harrison who won the 100 meters (11.30), the 110 meter hurdles (14.90) and the long jump (20-07). He was also second in the triple jump with a 40-04.50 leap.
The Zephyr boys also dominated the distance races as Gabe Lamm won the 3,200 (10:02.10) and was second in the mile (4:37.70).
Meanwhile, Calvin Schneck was tops in the mile, crossing the line in 4:37.40, and was second in the 3,200 with a 10:06.40 mark.
Sebesta said that Schneck's effort in the 3,200 allowed them to be in position to win. He came back to take second place after trailing by approximately 20 meters, making sure they got those three points.
"He really ran a great race," said Sebesta.
J.C. Falcon continued his torrid spring, winning the 400 meters (52.10), as well as the 4x800 along with Frisch, Plucinsky and Schneck who crossed in 8:32.60. He was also first in the high jump with a 5-7
Frisch was also tops in the 800, breaking the tape in 2:01.10, while Plucinsky was second at 2:02.40, and Koehler was third in the 400 with a 52.80 finish.
In the jumps, Dominic Brown-Andriulli was second in the long jump behind Harrison at 19-05.50, while in the triple jump Cary was third with a 40-02 bound.
In the throws, Jake Kerchner (41-04.50) and Nick Nejad (40-04.50) finished second and third in the shot put, while Nejad was third in the discus with a 105-3 heave. Nejad was also second in the javelin with a 172-04 mark.
The girls were highlighted by a number of superb performances led by Decontee Krayee and Kourtney Cunningham who went one-two in the 100 and 200 meters. First, Krayee took the honors in the 100 (12.80) with Kourtney Cunningham (13.10) coming in second, while Cunningham was tops in the 200 (26.90) with Krayee right on her heels in a photo finish.
Angela Stella also had a good meet, winning the 800 in 2:27.20, and was second in the 400, crossing in 1:01.40.
In the 1,600 Emily Brand came in second with a 5:43 mark, while in the hurdles, Jillian Kreglow was third in the 100, finishing in 17.20, and Alyssa Holland was second in the 300 with a 49.90 mark.
In the relays, the girls took first in the 100 as Krayee, Kourtney Cunningham, Kylee Cunningham and Ivan Jones broke the tape in 50.80.
In the jumps, Jones was third in the high jump at 4-10, while Taylor Hamscher was first in the pole vault, clearing 8 ft. Additionally, Jones won the long jump with a 15-05.50 leap, while Hamscher was second with a 15-03.00 mark.
In the throws, Madison Scarfaro was third in the discus with an 81-03 toss, and Natalie Sarceni was first in the javelin with a 92-01 mark.
Sebesta said that the girls showed a lot of moxie, but he didn't want to push too hard with the postseason right around the corner. Some of his runners and throwers needed some rest, and therefore were held back a bit against the Trojans.
