Girls lax goes 10-0 in LVC

Last week's game against rival Emmaus figured to be Parkland's lone remaining threat keeping them from an undefeated Lehigh Valley Conference girls lacrosse season.

It turns out that threat wasn't much of one when all was said and done.

The Lady Trojans (14-3 overall; 10-0 in LVC) took a quick 4-0 lead and handled the Lady Hornets (10-8 overall; 7-3 in LVC), 13-6, last Thursday at Troxell Middle School.

"We knew coming in that it was going to be a tough game because we beat them by one the first time," Cathleen Gaffney said. "We had to play strong and come out as a team."

On Monday, the Lady Trojans took care of business against Northampton, their final LVC opponent (20-3) to cement their perfect league season.

"It feels really good," Kelsey Carlon said following the Emmaus game. "We've been pretty excited for the past few weeks."

Much like their previous meeting against the Lady Hornets, the Lady Trojans got off to a quick start. Through the first 5:46, the Lady Trojans had built a 4-0 lead they would never relinquish.

Gaffney and Carlon put in the first two goals and Mackenzie Galli scored the next two. Galli finished with a game-high four goals in the win, while Gaffney and Carlon added three each.

"We like to come out strong and pump the goals in," Gaffney said. "And then we like to settle and play disciplined because we like to kill clock and we don't want to turn the ball over a lot."

The Lady Hornets made it a four-goal game, 7-3, at halftime after scoring two of the final three goals in the first half.

But a quick start to the second half ended any possible momentum for the visitors.

Sophie Castillo had a hand in both of the Lady Trojans' goals to open the second half, including a strike with 24:41 to play that made it 8-3. Moments later, she found Sarah Stagaard for her second goal to push it to 9-3.

"We've had some games where we play a little bit of disciple, but then we let them slip back," head coach John Seitzinger said. "This game was the first one we played 50 minutes of disciplined lacrosse."

The trio of Carlon, Gaffney and Galli ended the game much like the way they started it. Each tallied a goal in the final moments to put away the Lady Hornets after Dakota Walck scored back-to-back goals for Emmaus.

Much of the Lady Trojans' success came off face offs, a facet they dominated against the Lady Hornets. Those wins at the center often resulted in goals on the offensive side of the field.

"Everyone on the circle did so good off the draw," Gaffney said. "They pretty much got the ball every single time. We knew we had to play hard to come out with the win."

Molly Diamondstein recorded 15 saves in goal for the Lady Trojans and her six goals allowed was nearly half of what the Lady Hornets scored in the first meeting.

The Lady Trojans faced Easton in the first round of leagues on Wednesday, a team that played them to a one-goal game nearly two weeks ago.
