Girls eye playoff berth
With five games remaining on their schedule, the Whitehall girls softball team is looking for a little upward mobility to carry them into the postseason.
They currently sit at 7-8 with three of those wins coming against Lehigh Valley Conference competition. They now reside in fourth place in the North Division of the LVC, but can still qualify for the district playoffs if they win three of those remaining games.
That task will begin when they play Nazareth Area High School this week, followed by games against Parkland, Catasauqua, Pleasant Valley and William Allen.
It leaves little room for error, but head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend believes they have the ability to achieve that goal.
"We definitely can accomplish this and become hot at the right time for districts," said Berg-Townsend. "The team is playing well together and has definitely matured as the season has progressed.
Part of that maturity is becoming familiar with one another, and as a young team they've had to learn along the way. They've also had to rebound from some tough league losses, but Berg-Townsend believes they're prepared for the task.
"They are mentally and physically prepared to qualify for districts and are excited to," said Berg-Townsend. "We are taking each game, one at a time, making sure not to become too complacent or frustrated for that matter."
In their prior meeting the Blue Eagles handed the Zephs a 7-2 loss. However, the Zephyrs have been playing better as of late, winning three out of their last four games. During their three-game winning streak, they scored 39 runs, while only yielding three.
Their most recent game was a 6-5 loss to Northampton, owners of a 14-4 record and an odds-on favorite to make the Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs. In that game they were winning 5-3 before surrendering three runs in the top of the seventh. That scenario, losing a tough game late, has been something they've dealt with before, and Berg-Townsend feels they can turn that situation into something positive.
She said while it may gnaw at them, it can ultisomething positive.
She said while it may gnaw at them, it can ultimately serve as the fuel they need to propel them into the playoffs.
In the game against the Kids, Kay Solderitch only allowed three hits and struck out eight.
At the plate, Cara Bonshak went 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Additionally, Gabrielle Molitoris was 2-4, including a double and a run batted in, while Julia Solderitch was 2-3.
