Deadline to post building numbers in Allen June 30
More properties across Allen Township are sporting large numbers noting their address on posts.
The township deadline to have numbers displayed on structures, residential and commercial, is June 30. The numbers must be clearly visible so emergency personnel and others can locate the building.
Township supervisors earlier unanimously adopted legislation requiring building numbers. In many cases, it could be lifesaving in the event of a medical emergency allowing an ambulance and EMS to locate the address without delay.
The township notes the legislation protects families and the property if 911 services are needed such as fire, law enforcement and EMS.
Officials have argued clearly defined numbers are needed as a visitor, child or an injured person might be unable to provide clear directions or new emergency personnel may be unfamiliar with the area.
Other benefits of the numbers include mail, package and other deliveries and utility services such as electric, gas, cable and phone companies.
Township requirements note the address display requirement applies to every owner, lessee or occupant of each addressable building in the township.
Multiple dwelling units, apartments, duplexes and non-residential buildings are part of the requirement.
Requirements include 4" high white reflective numbers with a green reflective rectangular background, visible day or night. and placed on a 6" by 8" rectangular sign displayed either vertically or horizontally.
The numbers on the mailbox or post must be posted on both sides. Should a house not be visible from the road, township officials suggest postings the numbers so they are clearly seen from the road, either on a pole, sign or post.
If the residence is across the street from a mailbox, than the numbers should be posted along the driveway. If the driveway leads to more than one address, it is suggested to post all numbers at the end of the driveway and post the correct number at each building.
The numbers can be purchased at hardware stores, such as Miller Supply Ace Hardware and Lowes.
