Northampton Community College
Fine arts student exhibit open to May 5
NCC will hold its annual free exhibit of art work by fine art students from April 23 through May 5 in the Communications Hall Gallery, Main Campus. There will be a student artist talk from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 1 in room 190, College Center, followed by a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Communications Hall Gallery.
The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday thorugh Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. For information, call 610-861-5062.
McGuire-ClossonSpring 2014 Commencement Speaker
Margaret (Mardi) McGuire-Closson, vice president of student affairs at Northampton Community College, will be the speaker at the college's spring commencement at 6:30 p.m. May 22 at the Arthur L. Spartan Center, Main Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road.
McGuire-Closson, who began her NCC career in 1987 as director of admissions, was in 1992 named dean of students and in 2006 became vice president for student affairs. She was director of admissions at Centenary College and as an admissions counselor at Cedar Crest College, from which she earned a bachelor's degree and, from Lehigh University, a master's degree. McGuire-Closson received the NCC Professional Excellence Award in 1990 and the Club Advisor of the Year Award in 2003 and the Chairman's Award in 2004 for her support of the NCC Foundation.
NCC fourth in nation in digital tech
NCC was rated fourth in the nation among large community colleges in the use of technology to serve students, faculty and administrators. The ranking reflects the creation of an Innovation Lab, in which faculty can use emerging technology, will incorporate cutting edge technology, including digital signage, video walls, interactive projectors, tablets and computers in classrooms and science laboratories, and advanced networking and wireless capabilities.
Students can register for classes, contact their instructors, see their grades, check assignments, and access financial aid information on their phones and other mobile devices, and access Main Campus directions using Google Maps.
Classrooms and labs technology includes ipads, interactive response systems, 3D printers and projectors, simulations, laptops, and computers mounted on articulated arms for accessing patient information in nursing and dental hygiene programs.
NCC's president, Dr. Mark Erickson, and Dr. Deborah Noble Burak, Dean and Chief Information Officer, represented the college on April 6 in Washington, D.C., at an event honoring the colleges rated in the top ten.
Job placement rates increase
NCC reports a 90 per cent rise from last year in rates of job placement and continued education for the 1,775 graduates of the Class of 2013, based on a survey conducted by the career services office.
Eighty-three percent of the degree, certificate and specialized diploma graduates were surveyed; 91 per cent were either employed or continuing their educations. The highest median salary was $76,440 which was for two of the graduates of the computer maintenance program. The second highest median salary, $58,240, was reported by full and part time employed dental hygiene graduates. The third highest median salary, $51,355, was reported by diagnostic medical sonography program graduates.
Exceptionally high job placement was reported in radiography (100 per cent of 24 graduates), automotive technology (96 per cent of 29 graduates), and in culinary arts (88 per cent out of 27 graduates).
Hispanic Awards Fiesta
The Hispanic Center Leadership Awards awards will be presented at the annual "Fiesta" on May 1 at DeSales University. Nominations have been recieved for the Outstanding Educator Award, Sergia Montz Volunteer Award and the Marlene "Linny" Fowler Outstanding Youth Award. For information, email mmorales@hclv.org.
Summer youth program registration opens
Horizons for Youth summer programs registration for rising k through ninth grades is open. Itineraries include Last Blast trips for children entering second through ninth grades, Camp Invention for grades one through six, Camp Northampton on the Road, and Camps Northampton and Southside Child Care. Christopher M. Gaylo appointed
Christopher M. Gaylo, founder and principal of CMG Consulting, has been appointed director of the NCC technology center. He taught previously at colleges and universities in New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, cum laude, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; a master's degree in mechanical engineering; and graduate studies at the New York Institute of Technology and the Roth School of Management at Long Island University.
He was a Grumman Aerospace Fellow at Polytechnic Institute of New York. He holds fifteen patents and has two pending. He held leadership positions at S.S. White Technologies, Norex Medical, Therics Inc., and the PA Consulting Group.

Lehigh University
Pa. Governor's School session set
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett announced two new Governor's Schools for summer 2014: the Governor's School for the Agricultural Sciences at Penn State University, Centre County, and the Governor's School for Engineering and Technology, Lehigh University.
The Lehigh University session, from July 20 to August 2, is a residential program for high school students interested in studying technology and mathematics. The classes include enrichment experience in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), cooperative learning, and hands-on laboratory experiences. Moravian College
BFAC grant awarded
Moravian College will receive a grant from The Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission (BFAC) in support of its first annual writers' conference, "Life Histories: Discovering self, community and world." The June 6-8, 2014, open to the public event will feature nationally known writers Ursula Hegi and Lauri Halse Anderson as keynote speakers.
Princeton Review list includes Moravian
Moravian College is one of the 332 most environmentally responsible colleges in the U.S. and Canada, according to The Princeton Review (www.PrincetonReview.com). Penn State Lehigh Valley
Ratzenberger to speak at commencement
John Ratzenberger, Emmy-nominated actor, entrepreneur and philanthropist, will be the featured speaker at Penn State Lehigh Valley's 2014 commencement ceremony to be held at 11 a.m.May 10 at Stabler Arena.
He is best known for playing mail carrier "Cliff Clavin" on the sitcom "Cheers." He has had a voice part in all of Pixar's feature films made to date. Ratzenberger produced and hosted "Made in America" for the Travel Channel. He co-authored "We've Got It Made in America: A Common Man's Salute to an Uncommon Country."
