Catty block party planned for Old Home Week

Joni Elekes released advanced information for the block party scheduled for June 28 as a part of Catasauqua's Old Home Week celebration.

The block party will center around the downtown business district along Front and Bridge streets.

Centered on the July 4 holiday, Old Home Week will be a weeklong celebration in Catasauqua and North Catasauqua, inviting past residents and friends to return home to renew old friendships. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first Old Home Week celebration that celebrated the industrial progress of the communities.

"I am so glad that we were able to get Phat Boys and Blackbird [Society Orchestra] for the block party," Elekes told The Press. "They are quality local bands."

Phat Boys will perform in the morning from 9 a.m. to noon and Blackbird will play until 3 p.m.

The bands are not the only activities to draw visitors to the block party. The day starts with a 5K run, with the starting gun fired at 9 a.m. Sign-up for the race is at Run Lehigh Valley and everyone who signs up gets a T-shirt. Prizes are awarded for top finishers and unusual categories created by the race committee, including best costume and fastest runner in pink running shoes.

After the race, the local eateries will be open. Residents who haven't had a chance to try the borough's latest bistro will have an opportunity to enjoy Evonne's Sandwich Shop. Also, desserts at Love at First Bite will offer block party specials.

Cathy's Creative Catering, recognized for excellence throughout the Lehigh Valley, will have a special menu.

Traditionalists might want to stay with Pies on Pizza, Catty Corner and the Catasauqua Market for snacking or lunch.

For those in need of an adult beverage, Richies Public House will be open to lift bottle caps. One special beer is reserved for the certified last place finisher of the 5K race, assuming they cross the finish line by 3 p.m.

Kids will have time for the moon bounce from Bouncin' Away before they go to the face painting and craft booth.

For the more intellectually inclined, Bridge Street Art Studio will be open with videos and oral presentations on the history of the borough.

Not to be outdone, the Catasauqua Public Library will present some historical artifacts.
