Pates hope to clinch districts
Freedom hopes to be the only local team competing in the district postseason this spring.
The Pates (8-7, 4-7) need one victory in their last three matches to clinch a berth. They got swept by Easton in three games (15-25, 19-25, 17-25) on Monday evening to push the onus on them registering a win over city rivals Bethlehem Catholic (4-7, 4-7) or Liberty (5-10, 4-9) this week.
Neither of those will be easy matches as well, since the local rivals never go down easy.
Head coach John Yanek was hoping that things could have been clinched for his team after Monday night, as their second loss to Easton this year has still kept the Pates from gaining a win over one of the Lehigh Valley Conference's elite teams.
"A win over Easton would have been big," Yanek said. "It would have been the push we needed. We just need to beat one upper tier team to get our confidence."
Freedom still has Wyoming Valley West on the schedule for Saturday as well, so Yanek would like to have his district scenario ironed out before an ultimatum needs to be laid this weekend.
"We need to stay focused and finish games," he said. "I believe we have turned the corner a little bit, with some of the players believing in themselves more."
Should the Patriots qualify for districts, it would be the 21st appearance under Yanek's leadership.
Becahi battled Liberty to five games on Monday and came out with a win 32-34, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 15-11. The win was a boost for Becahi down the stretch, as they'll look to play the spoiler role against Freedom tonight, followed by their season finale against Easton on Friday.
Liberty took on Southern Lehigh last night, face Easton tonight and end their campaign against Freedom on Friday.
This season marks the first time Easton (10-3, 7-3) will win the East division and head to the LVC playoffs since the conference came together.
